A History of Steiff Bears
- Margarete Steiff was born in 1847 in Giengen, Germany. She was diagnosed with polio before the age of 5, leading to her legs being paralysed
- Margarete Steiff trained as a seamstress and worked on clothing for nearly 20 years
- In 1879 she began making soft toys, beginning with a small felt elephant, and founded the Steiff company a year later
- Within 6 years, over 5,000 elephants had been sold, and Steiff began to branch out into other animals
- In 1902, Steiff's nephew Richard Steiff designed the world's first toy bear with jointed limbs, and settled on mohair plush as a fur material
- From 1906, this new bear was being sold by American importers under the name Teddy Bear, famously after the President Theodore Roosevelt, and its success prompted the founding of the international Steiff brand
- 1909 - Margarete Steiff dies of pneumonia at the age of 61
- During the 1920s, demand grew for Steiff products, with Molly the Steiff Dog selling over half a million before the 1930s Depression intervened. Production resumed in the late forties after the second World War
- In 1953, the Teddy Bear celebrated its 50th birthday, with the "Jackie" anniversary bear being introduced
- 100 years of Steiff was celebrated in 1980, and the company began producing limited edition collectors items
- The Steiff Club was founded in 1992
- 125 years of Steiff was celebrated in 2005, with a museum opening celebrating the more than 20,000 different toy animals the company had made since its inception
